Today I have decided to put up an excerpt from The Gifted for this month’s Sample Sunday. I hope you enjoy it=)
Jane startled awake as a group of people ran past her. She wasn’t sure when she had fallen asleep, but guessed it had been a while ago by the fading light coming through the trees. She stood up and watched as more people passed, their clothes seeming to come from another time.
She turned to look around the tree and jumped out of the way of a woman in a simple brown dress cut high in the neck with long sleeves and a skirt the woman had hiked up. Her hair was in a messy bun with leaves and twigs in it.
“Run!” the woman hissed, terror on her face. She took off around Jane and didn’t look back.
Goosebumps rose on Jane’s skin and she looked in the direction the people had come from. She stood frozen as men on horseback came through the trees. They wore armor she had only ever seen in movies; breast plates, chain mail, and metal helms. They held swords in their hands.
Jane backed away from them, forgetting where she was, and fell into the pond behind her. She pulled herself out, coughing and gagging.
As she crawled on the forest floor trying to breathe again, horse hooves appeared in front of her. She looked up to see a sword pointed at her face.
“Who are you?” the man with the sword asked.
“Jane,” she coughed out, not taking her eyes off the weapon in front of her.
“Why aren’t you dressed?”
“Dressed?” she repeated daring a glance at the man pointing the sword at her. She didn’t understand what he was talking about until she thought about the others who had run past her.
What is going on? she wondered.
“I… I don’t know?” she answered herself as much as she answered the man. He sneered at her before turning in his saddle and calling for someone to tie her up.
