Sundered: A Review

A miracle drug, Nevermore, spreads like wildfire throughout the world allowing people to eat what they want, no matter how unhealthy it is and yet still lose weight. It is everything the human population has ever dreamed of and Mara is no different. Only a simple twist of fate stops her from taking the drug.

As the weeks roll by, it becomes apparent that Nevermore is not the miracle it claimed. A true to life nightmare, the drug steals the very essence that makes up humanity and unleashes a new and deadly species on the world, a species bent on filling its belly. Locked down within their small farm home, Mara and her husband Sebastian struggle against increasingly bad odds, fighting off marauders and monsters alike.

But Sebastian carries a dark secret, one that more than threatens to tear them apart, it threatens to destroy them both and the love they have for each other.

The secret forces Mara to make the ultimate choice. Will she live for love, or will she live to survive?

(Description from Goodreads)

First, I would definitely be one of the ones to take Nevermore. Second, I’m thrilled I had the chance to read this wonderful novel by Shannon Mayer. She does a great job of showing us a fun and interesting main character in Mara and one hell of a twist in the relationship with Bastian. The conflict Mara has between the love for her husband and her instinct for survival is believable, and the descriptions of the world she lives in is simple, yet easy to see. Include a bear named Bob and a rough survivalist and you have an interesting cast of characters. I rooted for Mara and Bastian to make it through the strange events that take place and was floored by the ending which made me buy the second book in the series immediately.

It is a truly enjoyable book and one I would recommend to anyone looking for a fun and easy read.

You can find Shannon Mayer’s book Sundered on Amazon.

  1. I think this book sounds awesome. But then I would say that, it sounds like the novel I was going to write for NaNo! Darn, why do I always get the good ideas too late?

  2. Wow. What a premise. It's part of a series? Ugh.

  3. I'm with you, Donna. Sounds like a great premise, but I'm not thrilled about series books either.
