A lot, and yet…

Stack of thin flexicover books on reflective table
By Horia Varlan

I have a lot of books.  Lots and lots.  There is a wall in our house that has a large bookshelf attached to it. It is covered with books… I still need more room.
A couple of weeks ago, I got another bookshelf.  One of those easy assemble ones from the local Walmart.  I haven’t put it together yet and a very badly need to.  My books are spilling out of the large wall bookshelf.

Now, I need more books.  I know, I know.  You wonder how I could possibly need more books if the shelf is already overflowing.  Well, let me tell you…
I’m a writer.  Well, I at least like to think of myself as a writer…. I write. Not a single story of mine has been published, but still I write. Now, some might wonder at calling me a writer if none of my stuff has been published, but here’s the thing:

You don’t have to be published to be a writer. All you have to do is love to write and do so a lot… And by a lot I mean every day.
Yeah, a totally amazing concept, right?! (*eyeroll*)
Anyway, you may wonder what writing has to do with reading. Well, I’ll tell you… Reading can help you improve your writing.
It’s true.  I read a lot of blogs by established writers and pretty much all of them say that to be a good writer you need to read a lot.  It’s a matter of critiquing the work which will help you.

Oddly enough, before I started reading the blogs and saw this advice, I had already started doing it.  I read to learn, not just to experience the worlds created in books.  Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t JUST reading for objective observation of writing styles.  I love reading too. I love diving deep into books, surfacing for breath only when about to black out.  My biggest pet-peeve where writing is concerned is spelling and obvious grammer errors.  Things like this detract from the reading experience.  I catch 99% of all these types of errors in books.  Now, I am a consumate spell/grammer checker with my word processor…. Except in blogs… I blog on the template they give here, not on my word processor (It is sacred and cannot be sullied by anything).

Anyways… So, yeah. I have a lot of books, but I NEED a lot more.  I have tons of “research” to do and the only way to do it is by reading awesome – and sometimes not so awesome – books.

(Speaking of not so awesome books… Yeah, you gotta read those too.  Don’t just pick it up and then throw it down when you realize how horrible you find it… READ IT THROUGH!! You’ll be better for it… You’ll have learned more than you might realize!)

So, I hit up my favorite bookstore (which is, sadly, a couple hours away), I hit up my local libraries (I have several library cards from local towns, not just the one I live in), eBay (wow, on the amount of cheap, used books on there… really!), and I borrow from friends.

Soon I will be investing in an eBook reader (very excited about it!) and then I will be able to expand my book reading to those millions of independent writers out there who publish this way to get their stuff seen.  I look forward to reading the good, the bad, and the ugly of these books!! (Plus, this will save trees and shelfing space for when I want to read my favorite authors too!!)

Anyway, I’m off! Not only do I have a full day’s mothering to do, I have writing and reading to do as well!!
Have a wonderful Saturday!!

PS- Don’t just read books… Read EVERYTHING!!!
